People often ask how I afford to travel the world. The problem with questions like this is that most people either have an exaggerated opinion of what travel should be or don’t do enough research when planning their travels.
No doubt, traveling costs money, however, how much you pay for it is entirely up to you. We may be visiting the same destination but you may pay a premium to get there, while mine may be significantly lower than yours because I do the following;
Smart Planning
Before you can start living your dreams to travel the world, you have to earn. And by earning, I mean a regular income. Work extra hours, have a side hustle, just find ways to add income.
We can never exaggerate the importance of planning- smart planning. I find that most people are lazy when it comes to research, which requires a lot of patience.
You should decide on when you’d love to travel, give yourself enough time to save up, research, read reviews online, join travel forums and ask relevant questions.
Know when to book flights
Your airfare will form part of your major travel expense which is why it is important to be strategic about your searches, monitor price drop and take advantage of promotional offers.
If you are traveling on a budget, be ready for some inconvenience that you can handle such as, opting for a longer route instead of a direct flight, to save cost.
Travel in low season
Traveling during holiday seasons such as Summer, Christmas, Thanksgiving etc. is expensive. Plan your trip either at the beginning or end of these peak seasons when prices drop.
Save on accommodation
For some, it is usually a hard task deciding on where to stay, especially in destinations they have never been to. There are numerous sites that offer pocket-friendly accommodation but you need to spend time researching and narrow your search to your budget. Try booking private apartments on Airbnb instead of staying in a hotel. Also, consider decent hostels and bed and breakfast.
You’d be amazed how much information you’d gather when you research deep.
Travel like a local
Shun taxis, use the bus or metro, eat local and explore beyond the touristy areas. Be a traveler and not a tourist.
This is what makes one travel experience different from another.
